TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in 11th place after the first two rounds at the National Invitational Tournament, hosted at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. The Lobos finished the day with a 34-over-par 304-298=602, but sat in second place for most of the morning, holding steady at 10-over through most of the first round.

Southern Methodist, Tulsa and Arizona are all tied for the lead at 16-over.

The Lobos’ Travis Ross was also in 10th place early, finishing the first round in a tie for 10th with four other golfers with a 2-over 74 on the par 72, 7,094-yard Catalina Course. Ross followed that up with a 3-over 73 on the par-70, 6,852-yard Sonoma Course.

New Mexico’s John Catlin heads into Tuesday’s third round tied for 27th place, having carded an 8-over 78-72=150. Tom Carlson is tied for 43rd with a 10-over 76-76=152, with Sam Chavez (76-78=154, +12) tied for 57th.

Shane McDonald is tied for 67th with a 14-over 79-77=156, while Sam Saunders, playing as an individual, is tied for 73rd at 15-over with two holes left to play in his second round.

Three of the teams in the field are ranked in the current (March 11) Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll, which includes (ranking): Baylor, California, Colorado State (22), Houston, Kent State, SMU, TCU (18), Texas (15), Texas-El Paso, Tulsa, UNLV, Wyoming and host Arizona (two squads).
