BOISE, Idaho —The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team has wrapped up their weekend of competition on the road in Boise, Idaho. The team beat Montana in a ,4-3, decision to split the weekend’s two matches. Lobos finish their weekend by improving their record to, 7-6.
The Lobos opened the weekend with a match against #72 Boise State. New Mexico came up short to the Broncos, 7-0.
With a hunger for a win on the road, New Mexico was ready to play Montana on Saturday. The Lobos came out and bested the Grizzlies in a close, 4-3, decision.
New Mexico captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and the No. 3 seed. Senior duo Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva beat opponents Rebecca Bran and Whitney Paluch, 8-4. At No. 3, sophomores Laura Richardson and Kristin Eggleston defeated Ashley Mackey and Madeline Murray, 8-3.
In singles play New Mexico claimed three more wins to take the match against the Grizzlies. Villanueva had a winning performance in three-sets against her opponent Paulch, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In No. 4 singles, Bonner swiftly defeated Lauren Gibson, 6-1, 6-3. Richardson faced off against Murray once more in singles beating Murray, 6-1, 6-3.
Head Coach Roy Cañada believes that their hard work and a strong team effort helped the Lobos close it out.
“We had to work really hard to get this win,” Cañada said. “I am proud of our effort and the way we competed. We made a few adjustments in the line up which ended up paying off for us. We have one more match before we head into conference play and we are looking forward to getting some payback when we face Nevada next weekend”.
