PALM DESERT, Calif. — University of New Mexico men’s golfer Tom Carlson again set the pace for the Lobos, scoring his fourth top-10 finish in five tournaments as New Mexico finished ninth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegaite.
Carlson, who led the tournament after the first round with a 3-under-par 69, finished tied for ninth after closing with a 5-over-par 221 . The Lobos’ senior rebounded from a second-round, 7-over-par 79 by finishing Sunday out with a 1-over 73.
Carlson’s opening-round 69 tied for the second-best round of the tournament. He finished four strokes behind individual medalist Scott Travers from Santa Clara.
As far as New Mexico’s team effort, the Lobos closed strong, moving from 15th after the first round to ninth by the tourney’s conclusion. New Mexico carded a 45-over 310-302-297=909, finishing in the top half of the 20-team field and landing another team top-ten finish to boot.
Texas A&M won the team title with a 15-over 294-293-292=879, followed by UNLV (297-293-294=884, +20), SMU (299-301-209=890, +26), UC Santa Barbara (301-299-292=892, +28) and Denver (305-296-294=895, +31).
As for the rest of the Lobos, senior Travis Ross tied for 25th after finishing with a 10-over 77-75-74=226. Fellow senior Sam Chavez recovered nicely from an opening-round 13-over 85 to tie for 41st with a 14-over 85-71-74=230.
Sophomore John Catlin finished tied for 60th with a 17-over 79-68-76=233, while fellow sophomore Ryan Gay tied for 96th with a 31-over 88-78-81=247.
This year marked the third year that Wyoming hosted its Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, but was the first year the tournament had been held in the spring season. The course measured 7,305 yards and played to a par of 72.
New Mexico’s next tournament comes in next Monday, as the Lobos head to the Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif., March 7-8.
