The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the Bruin Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif. The Lobos shot a 311 (23-over) today on the Valley Course (par 72, 6,282 yards) at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club.
UNM trails leader and 3rd-ranked UCLA by 30 shots. The Bruins fired a 7-under 281, the only team in the 15-team field to break par. Seventh-ranked Arizona is second at 292.

After 15 holes, the Lobos were in fifth place at 13-over, but it got tougher coming home. UNM dropped 10 strokes over the final three holes to fall into 12th.
Playing in her first competition of the spring, sophomore Beth Buchner was even par through 14 holes after birdies at 8, 10 and 11. However, she bogeyed 15 and 17 and suffered a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 18th to finish with a 76.
Freshman Manon de Roey also came in with a 76. She lost three strokes with bogeys at 14, 15 and 16.
Freshman Sammi Stevens had a 78. Junior Sarah Salvo finished with an 80, losing six shots over the final five holes. Her breakdown was a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 16th.
UNM’s No. 1 player, junior Rebecca Hellbom, struggled with an 83. Freshman Sofia Hoglund, who is playing as an individual, shot an 85.
UCLA’s Glory Yang and Malin Enarsson from San Diego State are atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under 69.
