PALM DESERT, Calif. – University of New Mexico men’s golfer Tom Carlson has been swinging a hot set of sticks in recent weeks, finishing in the top 10 in two of the Lobos’ last three tournaments.
So it should come as no surprise that Carlson finds himself atop the leaderboard at the end of the first day of play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, held at the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club. He carded a 3-under-par 69 through the first 18 holes to take a one-stroke lead over UNLV’s Kevin Penner heading into the second day.
Carlson, Penner and UC Santa Barbara’s Glen Scher were the only three players to shoot sub-par rounds.
As to the second day, it will begin with the conclusion of the second round – originally scheduled for Saturday but not completed by one of the foursomes due to darkness.
“One foursome was unable to finish the second round, and so the second round will be concluded at 7 a.m., Pacific Time on Sunday morning,” according to the recap published on Wyoming’s athletic department website.
While Carlson leads the event, the Lobos as a team didn’t fare quite as well. New Mexico finds itself tied with Hawaii for 15th place heading into Sunday. The Lobos shot a 22-over 310, 16 strokes behind leader Texas A&M’s 294.
The next highest Lobo on the leaderboard is fellow senior Travis Ross, who carded a 5-over 77. He is followed by sophomore John Catlin, who is tied for 66th at 7-over. Sam Chavez is tied for 96th after shooting a 13-over 85, with sophomore Ryan Gay in 101st with a 16-over 88.
