ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico softball team rolled up 11 runs on 13 hits Friday to defeat Northern Colorado, 11-3, in six innings at Lobo Field. The Lobos had five players with multiple hits, including a 3-for-3 performance from junior Kaity Ingram. UNM had home runs from junior Jessica Garcia and sophomore Cassandra Kalapsa in the victory. New Mexico improved to 4-3 and remains undefeated at home (4-0). Northern Colorado slipped to 1-6 with the loss.
UNM scored early and never let up. The Lobos plated two runs in the first, four in the second and added two more in the third. UNM finally stretched out the game late and reached the run-rule limit in the sixth inning. Garcia belted a solo homer to right center field to leadoff the bottom of the sixth and gave UNM the 11-3 win.
UNC scored a run in the second and two in the third and never could capitalize on 10 hits.
Sophomore Cassandra Kalapsa had two hits and three runs. Freshman Chelsea Anaya had a pair of hits along with sophomore Stefanie Carramusa and junior Danielle Castro.
Sophomore Kaela DeBroeck pitched five inning in the win and improved to 2-1 on the year. DeBroeck only allowed two earned runs, while giving up nine hits. True freshman Madeline Greene made a relief appearance and pitched the final inning.
UNC used four different pitchers Friday in the series opener. Kelli Henderson (1-3) started and took the loss. Henderson gave up eight runs on seven hits during the game.
