New Mexico – Baylor Game 3 Box Score

WACO, Texas — The New Mexico softball team racked up six hits Saturday against undefeated Baylor, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the series sweep. The Bears (8-0) pulled out a 3-1 victory at Getterman Stadium and handed UNM its third straight loss. New Mexico, despite the losses, outhit or at least tied Baylor in hits during two of the three games. The Lobos slipped to 3-3 on the year and will return home next weekend to get back on the winning track.

Baylor utilized another big inning to secure the win. The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on for their eighth consecutive win. All three of the Baylor runs were unearned.

New Mexico starter Kari Gutierrez pitched 3 1/3 innings and dropped to 2-2 during the young season after allowing the three Baylor runs. She only allowed five hits and had two strikeouts, but Lobo defensive miscues proved fatal.

Lobo sophomore pitcher Kaela DeBroeck made her third appearance of the year coming on in relief. DeBroeck pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of one-hit softball.

New Mexico plated its only run in the top of the sixth. Junior Jessica Garcia doubled to right field and eventually scored on a Kerry Hodgins ground out. Hodgins leads New Mexico with six RBIs this season.

Garcia went 2-for-3 at the plate and led UNM offensively. She has a team-high batting average of .444 and five doubles.

The Lobos return home to host Northern Colorado next weekend. The first game of the series is Friday at 6 p.m. at Lobo Field. UNC and UNM will play a doubleheader Saturday.
