WACO, Texas — The New Mexico softball team dropped a doubleheader Friday at Baylor in Getterman Stadium. The Lobos lost game one, 7-2, and fell in game two, 4-0. UNM outhit the Bears in game one 7-6 despite the loss. New Mexico enters the series finale Saturday with an overall record of 3-2. Baylor improved to 7-0 with the victories.
New Mexico battled in game one and played with one of the top softball programs in the country. Baylor scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bears plated a run on a hit and a UNM error.
New Mexico’s comeback attitude prevailed again in the top of the fifth. The Lobos scored two runs and took a 2-1 lead. UNM managed three straight hits and capitalized on a Baylor error to score the go-ahead runs. Junior Kaity Ingram, freshman Chelsea Anaya and sophomore Stefanie Carramusa all had hits in the inning.
Baylor rallied from behind in the sixth, scoring five runs and clinching the victory. The Bears had four hits in the inning.
Sophomore Kaela DeBroeck took the loss for UNM and dropped to 1-1 on the year. DeBroeck pitched five innings, allowing seven runs on six hits. Only four of the seven runs were earned. True freshman Madeline Greene came on in relief and pitched the final inning.
Carramusa led the way offensively going 2-for-2 in game one. Six different Lobos had hits in the opening game.
In game two, Baylor had a four-run bottom of the second inning and pulled out the victory. That was the only scoring in the nightcap for either team.
The Lobos got a decent pitching performance sophomore Kari Gutierrez (2-1). Gutierrez pitched the full six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.
The Lobo bats only had four hits in game two, compared to seven by the Bears.
