ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team downs Montana State in a 6-1 victory. After a heartbreaking loss yesterday to New Mexico State, the Lobos weren’t finishing without a win. New Mexico improves their record to 5-3.
The match got off to a strong start with the New Mexico claiming the doubles point. The Lobos took all three of their match from the Montana State Bobcats.
In singles play it was long matches and talented play that finalized that brought the points they needed for the win. With wins coming from No.1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Freshmen Michaela Bezdickova and Nikolina Grbac have brought the international experience that the Lobos needed. Bezdickova defeated Montana’s Charlotta Hjalmarsson, 6-2, 6-2. Grbac beat Paulina Lopez Trevino in a pulled out three match set, 6-1, 4-6, 10-2.
Head Coach Roy Canada knows that the only direction is up.
“I am very happy with this win,” Canada said. “We have worked hard and we deserve this. We closed out matches and it was great to see that. We are improving every weekend. We never give up.”
Up next for the Lobos, the team travels to Boulder, Colo next weekend. The Lobos play Oregon on Saturday, February 19, 2011 and Colorado on Sunday, February 20, 2011. Both matches begin at 11 a.m.
