ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team (4-2) will host in-state rival New Mexico State (1-1) and Montana State (1-1) this weekend. Matches begin on Friday, February 11, 2011 when New Mexico Lobos take on New Mexico State Aggies at 5 p.m. The following day Montana State and New Mexico will play at 6 p.m.

Now that the Lobos have gained their momentum they are ready to face any challenge ahead. In the first doubleheader of the season the Lobos finished with two solid wins. In the first match against Western New Mexico, Lobos defeated the Mustangs, 7-0. New Mexico then repeated the win by beating Abilene Christian, 5-2.

The Rio Grande Rivalry is a series between The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University that encompasses sports for both programs. The Rio Grande Rivalry is a new series starting that started in 2007-08 academic year. Head to head competition in every sport will be used on an annual basis. The series is not only for the current student-athletes competing in the sports but also to build school spirit and pride in the alumni and fans of New Mexico who cheer for the Lobos or the Aggies. The University of New Mexico has won the Rio Grande Rivalry for all three years the trophy was been available, last year’s score 16.50-10.50 in favor of the Lobos. The score for 2008-09 was 17.25-6.75. The score for 2007-08 was 16.25-6.75 UNM. This year UNM has already clinched the title by leading 18-4.5 points.

The rivalry series is a points-based system and is awarded to the school with the most points in all competitions. The specific scoring system is listed below for individual and teams sports.At the conclusion of annual competitions between the two institutions, the winner of the “Rivalry Series” will receive a rotating trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners. The winning institution will retain possession of the trophy for a period of one (1) year, until the award presentation the following year.

“We are looking at a very competitive weekend for us with a talented New Mexico State and our first dual match with Montana State in a very long time,” Canada said. “We are ready and hungry to compete our heart out this weekend. One important note for anybody wishing to come is that the Montana State match has been rescheduled to Saturday at 6 PM instead of Sunday at 10 AM.”
