The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is off to a good start in its first tournament of the 2011 spring season in Tucson, Ariz.
At the Arizona Wildcat Invitational being played at The Golf Course of Vistoso (par 72, 6,321 yards), the Lobos were tied with New Mexico State for fourth place when play was stopped late in the second round due to darkness.
Half of the 16-team field – including UNM – was unable to finish the second round. Round 2 will resume at 7:45 Tuesday morning. The final round is expected to begin at 8:15 a.m. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
Three New Mexico players have a total of four holes remaining to complete the second round. The Aggies finished 36 holes and have a team total of 19-over 595. Host and 7th-ranked Arizona is in the lead at 5-under with a few holes left in its second round. No. 9 Cal is at 3-under followed by Arizona State at 16-over.
The Lobos shot a 5-over 293 in the morning round, but were 14-over on their second round when play was halted.
Freshman Sammi Stevens is UNM’s leader in the clubhouse at 2-over 146 (71-75), tied for 14th place. She shot a career-low 71 in the first round. Stevens’ undoing was her final hole, the par-4 14th where she made bogey in both rounds today.
Junior Sarah Salvo was also able to finish 36 holes. She is at 11-over 155 (76-79). Salvo was 2-over through 14 holes in the second round, but dropped five shots in the final four holes.
Freshman Manon de Roey is 3-over for the tournament with one hole left to play in the second round. She equaled a career-best 71 in the opening round and was 4-over in the second round when play was stopped.
Junior Rebecca Hellbom shot a 3-over 75 in the first round, but was even in round 2 through 16 holes. Hellbom will start play Tuesday in a tie for 19th.
Freshman Sofia Hoglund has one hole remaining to finish the second round. She is 29-over thus far.
The Lobos are currently ahead of five teams – Oklahoma State, San Diego State, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington – that are ranked higher in the current GolfStat.com national poll.
Cal’s Joanna Lee and Kayla Montellaro from Idaho are atop the individual leaderboard. They are in the clubhouse at 5-under 139.
