UNM head coach Manon de Roey, Sofia Hoglund and Sammi Stevens.
The Lobos are making their 19th appearance at the Wildcat Invitational. UNM’s best finish is second place on three occasions: 1982, `85 and `88.
LAST YEAR’S WILDCAT INVITATIONAL – The 27th-ranked Lobos had a very successful showing in their first competition of the 2010 spring season, finishing sixth in a talent-laden, 16-team field. The tournament was shortened to two rounds after the second round was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Playing in cold and windy conditions at the Arizona National Golf Club, the Lobos shot a 16-over 300 in the final round. New Mexico’s 36-hole total of 601 (33-over) was better than six teams ranked higher than UNM entering the competition.
UNM finished ahead of No. 2 Auburn, No. 6 Southern Cal, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 15 Denver and No. 22 Oklahoma State. No. 1 Arizona State won the team title at 576.
UNM senior Jodi Ewart tied for fourth at 2-over 144 (72-72). She was 2-under on her round through 16 holes, but took a double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 to finish with a 72.
Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall claimed the individual title at 136.
UNM freshman Beth Buchner tied for 40th at 154 (76-78). Senior Britney Choy tied for 48th at 155 (78-77) while sophomores Sarah Salvo (85-73) and Rebecca Hellbom (75-83) finished in a tie for 57th at 16-over 158.
2010 FALL SEASON ENDS AT LAS VEGAS SHOWDOWN – On an unseasonably cold and blustery day in Las Vegas, Nev., last October, the shorthanded New Mexico women’s golf team showed a lot of grit and determination in the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Playing without their No. 1 golfer, the Lobos finished in 11th place at 898 (303-292-303) at the Boulder Creek Golf Club (par-72, 6,329 yards). UNM began the day in 13th place.
Rebecca Hellbom, UNM’s top-ranked player, was unable to compete in the final round due to illness. That left the Lobos with just four players with all four scores counting towards their team total.
After playing the first nine holes in 16-over-par, the Lobos showcased their best golf of the fall season down the stretch. The UNM quartet of sophomore Manon de Roey, junior Sarah Salvo and freshman Sammi Stevens was a combined 1-under over the final nine holes. Buchner, de Roey and Stevens all improved their place in the standings from the end of the second round, while Salvo remained the same.
Arkansas ran away with the team title, defeating second place Kent State by 23 shots. The 19th-ranked Razorbacks finished at 846 (18-under). Arkansas’ No. 5 player, Emily Tubert, led the individual competition wire-to-wire. She ended at 205 (11-under), and won by six shots.
Manon de Roey was the Lobos’ top finisher, tying for 32nd at 223 (77-71-75). She was 1-under over the final 12 holes. Salvo finished at 225 (73-75-77) and played the last nine holes in 1-under.
Stevens covered her last 12 holes in 1-under to finish in a tie for 45th at 226 (76-74-76).
Buchner birdied her final two holes to finish with a 75. She also had an eagle 3 on the par 5 16th. Buchner tied for 59th at 229 (80-74-75). Playing as an individual, freshman Sofia Hoglund tied for 76th at 235 (75-81-79).
UNM HEAD COACH Jill Trujillo – A 1990 UNM graduate and women’s golf letterwinner from 1987-90, Jill Trujillo is in her fourth season in charge of the women’s golf program. Trujillo has led New Mexico to five team titles, including three consecutive Mountain West Conference championships from 2008-10. She was named the 2007-08 MWC Coach of the Year.
Trujillo was head coach when UNM advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2007 at Daytona Beach. The Lobos finished 22nd at the Championships in 2007, 19th in 2009 and tied for 16th in 2010.
