ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team defeated UTEP, 6-1, for the team’s first home opener. New Mexico improves to a 2-1 record for their spring season.
Senior Anya Villanueva is undefeated in singles and 2 for 3 in doubles play. Villanueva took down Alexandra Glebova in singles, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles play, Villanueva and Ashley Bonner beat Martina Trierweiler and Carolina DeLuca, 8-6. Their doubles match was decisive for the doubles point in UNM’s favor.
Sophomores Kristin Eggleston and Michaela Oldani also won big matches in singles play. Freshman Michaela Bezdickova has won two consecutive singles matches at the number one spot. In the number two spot freshman Nikolina Grbac defeated Carolina DeLuca, 6-2, 6-1.
New Mexico moves on to play Texas Tech in the championship match. Wichita State fell to Texas Tech, 4-3.
Lobos play the Red Raiders Sunday at noon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
