MANHATTAN, Kan. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Kansas State Friday in the 2011 season opener. Lobo senior Villanueva dominated her singles match, winning in straight sets.

In singles play, Villanueva won her singles match, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Laura Richardson fell in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).

In doubles play Lobo freshmen Nikolina Grbac and Michaela Bezdickova defeated Antea Huljev and Petra Chuda, 8-5.

New Mexico’s head coach Roy Canada could see the difference in his team. “We competed hard and had several chances to turn it around, he said.” “Won the first set at number two and number five singles as well as serving for the first set and number one singles. We also were ahead in number one doubles but could not convert. This is a tough team to start out with at their turf but we are definitely looking a lot stronger this year. We are hungry for Drake’s match and we will come out swinging.”

The Lobos will take on Drake Saturday at 2 p.m. MT in Manhattan, Kan.
