BIG SKY, Mont. — The University of New Mexico ski team is in third place at the Montana State Invitational after Saturday’s competition. The Lobos competed in both Alpine and Nordic Saturday and will conclude the event Sunday. It was the first Nordic events for UNM this season. The Lobos enter Sunday with 373 points.

Colorado leads the seven-team event with 499 points. Utah is second with 462 points, followed by UNM (373) and Denver (373).

The Lobo men’s Alpine team finished fourth in the giant slalom. The men recorded 88 points. The women’s Alpine team had the second best run for with 99 points.

In the men’s giant slalom, Christopher Acosta led the way with an eighth place finish. Acosta had the best time of 1:54.47. Armin Triendl placed 13th, while Juho-Pekka Penttien was 14th.

Kate Williams had the best finish for New Mexico on Saturday, after finishing fifth in the women’s giant slalom. Williams had 39 points and a time of 1:58.45. Anne Cecilie Brusletto was eighth and Stefanie Demetz was 13th.

In the 10K men’s freestyle Nordic, UNM had the third most points with 101. The Lobos had three Top-10 finishers. UNM’s Martin Waaler Kaas led the way with a seventh place finish. Kaas finished with a time of 0:25:17.0. Christian Otto (0:25:24.6) placed ninth, while Tor-Hakon Hellebostad was 10th (0:25:32.4).

The Lobo women recorded 85 points in women’s 5K freestyle Nordic event, despite missing key members of the squad due to illness. Christina Loevald Hellberg finished seventh with a time of 0:14:13.6.

UNM will compete in the slalom event and classic Nordic Sunday.
