ALBUQUERUQE, N.M. – The Lobo swimming team returned to competition this afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo. at the Maverick Meet where they defeated host Mesa State 235-27, Northern Colorado 167-121, Colorado Mines 240-58, and the CU Boulder Club Team 245-16.
The team finished first in eight of the eleven events on the day, and with the victories the Lobo swimming and diving team improves its overall record to 6-5.The team of Stelicia Flores, Jorgi Hobson, Hayley Martin, and Tesse Maciejko finished first in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:49.77.
In the 1000-yard free freshman Monica Dudley touched the wall first with a time of 10:41.59, while teammates Jennifer Burgess and Maria Dudley followed in second and third place to round out the top three.
Lobos Heidi Zeiger and Sally Bellinger finished one and two respectively in the 200-yard free with times of 1:58.00 and 1:59.32. Flores picked up a second first place finish in the 100-yard back when she touched in 59.11. Teammates Julia Carroll and Erica Stuart finished third and fourth in the event as well.
Maciejko reached a second place finish in the 100-breast with a final of 1:08.78 while Martin, freshman Ashley Blanchette, and sophomore Lindsey Morris rounded out the top five.
Stuart finished first in the 200-yard back in 2:10.31.
“I was extremely happy with how the team performed today,” said Head Coach Tracy Ljone. “It was our first time competing in 7 weeks and with the winter training we just finished the team was tired; but they raced well and swam smart today.”
Senior Nanette Wittenberg finished first in both the 100- and 200-yard fly with times 59.88 and 2:11.98 respectively.
The Lobos claimed the top five spots in the 500-yard free with Monica Dudley claiming a second first place finish with a time of 5:13.49.Lindsey Morris finished second in the 200-yard breast and IM with finals of 2:26.66 and 2:13.59.
“Spirits are high all around right now,” Ljone said. “I believe we are right where we need to be heading into the home stretch and conference championships.”
