Colorado State Game
Jan. 12, 2011
Albuquerque, N.M.
New Mexico Head Coach Steve Alford
Opening Statement:
“It was a very difficult game for us. There was a lot of
pressure on our guys, and that can be draining. But
obviously we bounced back. We didn’t do a very good job
in Laramie (at Wyoming), and we were playing a team that
had eight days to get ready for us. They were very
confident and we knew we had to play well. Our guys did
good things for us tonight out there.”
“What do you tell Dairese Gary on a night when he goes
scoreless?”
“I took him into the locker room and told him we won a
game with him not scoring, and all you have to do is build
confidence in your team. Dairese has never been about
scoring, and he’s won games here when he’s scored one or
two points.
“He’s all about the team, and he’s done a good job about
understanding when we need him. He currently leads the
country for most active starts and he knows how to win in
a lot of different ways. This was obviously not his best
game, but he got Phillip (McDonald) ready to play, and he
did a good job leading.”
“What did you think of Drew (Gordon)?”
“Well, he had a double-double so it was obviously a good
game for him. He’s been good for us, and he’s coming back.
He’s getting his legs back. Three weeks ago he couldn’t
run 32 minutes so it’s good for him to come back to us.”
NEW MEXICO PLAYER QUOTES
Junior Drew Gordon
On your performance tonight:
“There was a lot of help from the team that we just played
(last Saturday’s Wyoming loss). The entire team wanted to
make sure everyone knows that we are still serious. My
game is a lot better than it has been in the last two
games. It’s just going to keep going up.”
Junior Phillip McDonald
On being a UNM reserve player tonight:
“It was a big wake up call for me tonight. I have to be
more active on the court. I had to make the plays.”
Colorado State Head Coach Tim Miles
“It’s a disappointing loss from our perspective cause you
feel like you did it to yourself. You make your free
throws and cut down on your careless turnovers and you win
the game. You have to credit New Mexico. Phil McDonald was
great and Drew Gordon was good, too.”
