Lobo Softball Clinics – Jan. 15-16 – Lobo Softball Complex
The softball season is fast approaching and the University of New Mexico Lobos’ softball staff has opened two days – Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16 – to hold clinics at the Lobo Softball Complex.
The clinics will focus on pitching (two sessions), hitting, infield skills and outfield skills. The sessions will emphasis basic techniques and fundamentals necessary to improve a player’s skills at any level of play. Players can sign up for one or several sessions.
The clinics will give participants a chance to work with one of the more dynamic, young coaching staffs in NCAA softball. Lobo head coach Erica Beach, a former Arizona State All-American pitcher, will head both pitching sessions.
When it comes to pitching, Beach has “been there and done that.” She led the ASU Sun Devils into four NCAA Tournaments (1999-2002) and into two Women’s College World Series appearances. She was a three-time All-PAC-10 pitcher and was named to the elite WCSWS All-Tournament team in 2002 before taking her considerable pitching skills into the pro ranks.
The clinic’s offensive/hitting session will be led by Lobo assistant coaches Lyndsey Angus and Christi Musser. Coach Angus also will head up the infield portion of the defensive clinic while coach Musser will work with all outfielders as well as hitters looking to hone their slapping skills at the plate.
Prior to joining Beach’s staff at UNM, Angus coached at Kentucky, where previously she was an All-SEC and All-Region selection as a Wildcats’ player. In 2003, she led the SEC in hitting at .429. She also played in the pro ranks before becoming a college coach.
Musser came to UNM after 12 seasons at Kansas as a four-year player and eight-year coach. She is a former All-American at Kansas, a four-time All-Big 12 player. She won a national title in 1999 playing for the Arizona Storm Majors team.
Members of the 2010-11 Lobo softball team also will assist with all sessions. The clinics are open to players 11-years of age and up. All campers will need to send in a copy of a medical insurance card and signed waiver to complete their registration for the camp. Without these documents on file, players will not be able to participate.
