ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico completed its first day of competition at the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic Fall Invite in Houston, Texas.

The Lobos are currently in sixth place with a total of 69 points. Louisiana State University (LSU), Southern Methodist University (SMU), and The University of Houston (UH) are currently in first, second, and third place.

The Lobos placed tenth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the 400-yard medley relay respectively with final times of 1:39.44 and 3:57.51.

Hannah Mercier, Jessica Montoya, Megan Gugerty, and Ashley Blanchette composed the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Julia Carroll, Ashley Blanchette, Nanette Wittenberg, and Sally Bellinger on the 400-yard medley relay team.

Freshman Monica Dudley finished fourth for the Lobos in the 500-yard freestyle finals with a time of 4:57.12. Jennifer Burgess, Sally Bellinger, Heidi Zeiger, and Tonya Gramstad finished twelfth, fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth in the consolation swim.

The Lobos had two of their top relay teams disqualified during the finals round, but Head Coach Tracy Ljone was still satisfied with the way her team performed on the first day of competition.

“Day one was fantastic, we had season best times in all events,” said Ljone. “Unfortunately both of our top relays were disqualified so that hurt us in points. We’re very excited with our swims on day one; we had a lot of second swims in finals and tons of best times.”

The Lobos continue competition today and Saturday as well. Results and Recap will be posted on Golobos.com following conclusion of the day’s events.
