New Mexico vs. Arizona State – Postgame Notes
Tuesday, November 16, 2010 – Albuquerque, N.M. – The Pit/Bob King Court
Down 13-7, UNM went on a 20-0 run over a 7:18 span, as ASU went without a field goal for 9:37. UNM never trailed after the 11:48 mark.
During the 9:37 stretch without a FG, the Sun Devils missed 10 shots and had six turnovers.
The UNM bench scored 15 straight points at one point in the 1st half, from down 13-7 to leading 22-13. Tony Snell had 5 points, Cameron Bairstow 4, Chad Adams 4 and Jamal Fenton 2.
The nine three-pointers for the Lobos (on 24 shots) were the most since February 27, 2010, when New Mexico hit 10-of-23 against BYU in the game that gave UNM its second-straight MWC regular season title.
Arizona State’s Trent Lockett scored a career-high 22 points.
The Lobos outrebounded the Sun Devils in the first half 16-13, despite no Lobo getting more than two. Nine of 10 Lobos had a rebound in the first half.
The game marked the first time UNM has trailed this season.
After going 9-for-10 from the line in the first half the Lobos missed their first three of the second half. They finished 15-for-21 (.714).
Senior Dairese Gary moved up three spots to 25th on the career scoring list with 1,019 points. He also passed Mel Daniels (1965-67) for 6th place all-time at UNM with 523 career free throws made.
Gary made his 99th career start, which have come consecutively. No. 100 will be Saturday at Cal.
Freshman Kendall Williams’ 4 threes were the most by a Lobo this season. He connected on his first four.
After going 2 of 9 from 3-point in the 1st half, UNM was 7 of 15 after halftime.
Junior A.J. Hardeman had 10 points and 3 rebounds in the 2nd half after getting just 2 points and 2 rebounds in 11 first-half minutes.
Sophomore Chad Adams tied career-highs with 4 rebounds and 14 minutes played.
Sophomore Jamal Fenton tied a career-high for the second straight game with 25 minutes played. His 10 FG attempts are a career-high.
New Mexico has won 13 straight non-conference home games. The last loss was to UTEP (73-60) on Jan. 6, 2009.
Head coach Steve Alford is 51-5 in The Pit, 29-2 against non-conference competition.
