ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team ended their annual UNM Fall Invite Sunday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex. The Lobos had a very successful run at this weekend with decisive wins against tough teams. This is the last tournament until the spring season. New Mexico has proven they are ready for a great season.
Wins today included Senior Anya Villanueva who beat her opponent from UTEP as well as, Freshman Michaela Bezdickova defeating an Arizona competitor.
This tournament was a true test of this year’s team and the Lobos aced it. The teams were some of the toughest competition they have had all fall. Going against teams such as, University of Arizona a top 30 team, Big 12 school Texas Tech and Western Athletic Conference team Boise State.
Head Coach Roy Canada had a wealth of praise for his girls showing this weekend.
“We have very disciplined tennis and we are mentally tough,” Canada said. “I am very encouraged and happy with the impressive strides we have made this year. We are gaining confidence and competing against tough teams. It gives us a good feel for what we’ll be playing in the spring.”
The Fall Invite concluded play for the fall. They will start their season on January 21, 2011 in Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State.
