ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico’s women tennis team showed dramatic improvement at this year’s Air Force Invitational at the Air Force Academy October 1-3. The Lobos captured 20 wins at the tournament against 12 other college teams.
The first day of competition the Lobos had a solid start with 10 wins. The wins, Friday, included two doubles wins and eight singles wins. Coach Roy Canada could not have been happier with their performance.
“A very solid start for us with 10 wins,” Coach said. “The returnees are playing better and getting the results to prove it, and the freshmen are making their own impact. Overall a very solid performance today.”
Lobo winners included doubles players Ashley Bonner/Laura Richardson and Michaela Bezdickova/Amy Shipperd. The singles wins were from Anya Villanueva, Michaela Bezdickova, Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson. Amy Shipperd and Nikolina Grbac won their first two rounds of the tournament.
The Lobos finished Saturday with two double and singles wins. The doubles wins coming from Eggleston/Michaela Oldani and Shipperd/Bezdickova. Oldani and Grbac won their singles matches for the day.
On the last day of competition, Sunday, the women won five matches.
Doubles wins came from Bonner/Richardson and Eggleston/Oldani. The singles winners of the tournament were Bezdickova, Eggleston, Oldani and Richardson.
“We came away with 20 wins for the tournament which is four times more than we got here last year,” Canada said. “We are improving every week and we are anxious for more wins in the season.”
Women’s tennis will next compete in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 13-16. At the ITA Regionasl, this will be their third tournament this fall.
