On a cold, blustery, unseasonal day in Las Vegas, Nev., the shorthanded New Mexico women’s golf team showed a lot of grit and determination in the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Playing without their No. 1 golfer, the Lobos finished in 11th place at 898 (303-292-303) at the Boulder Creek Golf Club (par-72, 6,329 yards). UNM began the day in 13th place.

Rebecca Hellbom, UNM’s top-ranked player, was unable to compete in the final round due to illness. That left the Lobos with just four players and all four scores counted towards their team total.

After playing the first nine holes today in 16-over-par, the Lobos showcased their best golf of the fall season down the stretch. The UNM quartet of sophomore Manon de Roey, junior Sarah Salvo and freshman Sammi Stevens was a combined 1-under over the final nine holes. Buchner, de Roey and Stevens all improved their place in the standings from the end of the second round, while Salvo remained the same.

Arkansas ran away with the team title, defeating second place Kent State by 23 shots. The 19th-ranked Razorbacks finished at 846 (18-under).

Arkansas’ No. 5 player, Emily Tubert, led the individual competition wire-to-wire. She ended at 205 (11-under), and won by six shots.

Manon de Roey was the Lobos’ top finisher, tying for 32nd at 223 (77-71-75). She was 1-under over the final 12 holes. Salvo finished at 225 (73-75-77) and played the last nine holes in 1-under.

Stevens covered her last 12 holes in 1-under to finish in a tie for 45th at 226 (76-74-76).

Buchner birdied her final two holes to finish with a 75. She also had an eagle 3 on the par 5 16th. Buchner tied for 59th at 229 (80-74-75).

Playing as an individual, freshman Sofia Hoglund tied for 76th at 235 (75-81-79).
The Lobos have completed their fall season. The next competition is Feb. 7-8, 2011, at the Arizona Invitational.
