The University of New Mexico women’s golf team had a much better performance in the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, however, it failed to pick up any ground. UNM shot a 4-over-par 292 – an 11-stroke improvement from round one – but actually dropped one spot to 13th place. The Lobos have a 36-hole total of 595 (303-292), 42 shots behind leader Arkansas (553), which is threatening to lap the 17-team field.
The 19th-ranked Razorbacks fired a 12-under 276 for a two-day total of 553 and an 18-shot lead over second-place Arizona entering Wednesday’s final round. The Wildcats and Arkansas tied for low round of the day.
Low scores were the norm today at the Boulder Creek Golf Club (par-72, 6,329 yards) in Boulder City, Nev. While Arkansas was the only team to finish in red numbers after the first round, nine teams shot par or better today.
Arkansas’ Emily Tubert continued her dominant play in round two, carding a 68. Following an opening-round 63, Tubert is at 13-under 131 and has a six-shot lead over her teammate, Kelli Shean, and Amber Littman from East Carolina.
Freshman Manon de Roey and junior Sarah Salvo are the top Lobo golfers at 4-over 148, tied for 39th place. After shooting 77 on Monday, de Roey fired a career-best 71, making 15 pars, a pair of birdies and one bogey. Salvo came in with a 75 after a first-round 73.
Junior Rebecca Hellbom and freshman Sammi Stevens are tied for 51st at 150. Hellbom rebounded from an opening-round 77 to shoot 73. Stevens had a 74 in round two.
Junior Beth Buchner also had a 74. She was 1-under on her round through the front nine, but played the back in 3-over. Buchner is tied for 75th at 154 (80-74).
Playing as an individual, freshman Sofia Hoglund is tied for 84th at 156 (75-81).
