USTA/ITA Regional Tennis Championship Information
LAS VEGAS, N.V.—The first day of the UST/ITA Regional Championships were halted Wednesday after a large storm cell circled Las Vegas, N.V. Many of the first round matches were able to be played but, once the rainstorm reached the Las Vegas valley, the afternoon matches were postponed to the following day.
Eight Lobos were set to compete in the regional tournament. Only three saw competition Wednesday morning; Joe Wood, Mads Hegelund, and Matthew Neeld. Four Lobos received byes, and one first round match was postponed to Thursday morning.
UNM senior Joe Wood swept his first match against Denver’s Varun Gunaseelan, 6-2, 6-1. The win advanced Wood to the next round which was intended to be played Wednesday afternoon. Instead, he will face top seed Mehdi Bouras of UNLV Thursday morning.
Lobo freshman Mads Hegelund was knocked off in a tough match against Kristian Kuharszky from Nevada, 7-5, 6-2.
Matthew Neeld, a UNM junior, defeated his first opponent, Dan Buckingham of Idaho State, 6-4, 6-3. He was also scheduled to play his following match Wednesday, but was rescheduled for Thursday morning as well.
The Lobo duos of Carl Ho and Joe Wood and Mads Hegelund and Matthew Neeld both claimed wins Wednesday. Ho and Wood downed Oliver Good and Simon Unger of Weber State, 8-4. Hegelund and Neeld defeated their opponents, Alex Clinkenbeard and Yannick Weihs from Denver, 8-5. Top seed duo Conor Berg and Ben Dunbar and no.5 seed Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson both received byes from their first rounds.
