FAIRFAX, Calif. — University of New Mexico men’s golfer Travis Ross carded a 7-under-par 135 though the first two rounds at Cal’s Alister MacKenzie Invitational Monday, held at the Meadow Club. Ross is tied for ninth place with UC Davis’ Austin Graham, and is 18 holes from notching his third straight top 10 finish.
Ross opened the tournament on fire, birdying five of his first seven holes in the opening round. Ross, who started play on the ninth hole, got as low as 7-under though 14 and finished the first round tied for 3rd at 6-under.
Ross didn’t maintain the torrid pace. The senior double bogeyed the ninth hole to start the second round, then rallied, scoring three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th to climb to 9-under.
Ross would close the round with six pars and two bogeys to close the day, entering Tuesday’s final round with a 65-70=135 at thepar-71 course, six strokes out of the lead. He led the field in par-five scoring, shooting 7-under and averaging 3.83 strokes .
“I was able to make a lot of birdies today, which was nice,” Ross said. “I had just a few too many bogies in round two, but overall gave myself a lot of opportunities. I hope that continues tomorrow.”
The rest of the Lobos didn’t fare nearly as well. Ryan Gay had New Mexico’s second-best effort with an even-par 72-70=142 and is in an 11-way tie for 39th. Senior Tom Carlson is tied for 62nd at 4-over, having shot a pair of 73s to total 146.
Sam Chavez, who was also seeking his third consecutive top-10 finish, has his work cut out for him if he’s going to pull it off. The senior is 7-over and tied for 76th, 14 strokes out of the top 10. Sophomore John Catlin is in 79th after carding a 10-over 77-75=152.
The host Bears recorded an astounding 40-under 262-266=528 and leads the field by 10 strokes. San Diego State is in second at 30-under (267-271=538), with Oregon State (273-277=550, -18), UC Davis (276-276=552, -16) and UC Irvine (277-278=555, -13) rounding out the top five.
Cal’s Ben An and The Aztec’s Alex Kang lead the individual race, each having carded a 13-under 129. Oregon’s Alex Moore (66-65=131, -11) and San Diego State’s Todd Baek (67-65=132, -10) are in third and fourth, respectively, while the Bears’ Stephen Hale, last year’s medalist, is tied with Minnesota’s Erik Van Rooyen for fifth at 9-under (133).
Tuesday’s final round begins at 8:45 a.m. MT, with Catlin teeing off first for New Mexico on the 10th hole. Chavez tees off nine minutes later, with Carlson, Gay and Ross teeing off every nine minutes after that.
