ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico’s men golfer Samuel Chavez has showed true excellence since transferring from the University of Arkansas. A California native, Chavez joined the Lobo crew for his junior 2009-2010 season. During this season he took part in six varsity tournaments. With such a mark already made for him at UNM, he is looking to be a qualifier for a top-five spot this season.
What is your breakfast of champions?
I enjoy a good egg and cheese omelet. However, after practice I usually grab a breakfast burrito.
Why did you decide to come to UNM?
Well I transferred from Arkansas. I came here to be with my brother, but he left. It’s been really good and it’s my last year.
Do you sing in the shower?
No! I definitely cannot sing at all. I feel if I could sing I probably would. My brother does sometimes.
What was the last book you read?
Ah I would probably have to say in high school, unfortunately. I did just finish a book for class though.
Do you have any pets?
No I don’t have pets. I don’t really like dogs all that much. I don’t really mind cats though. My sister does really want a dog, so we will see how that goes.
What is your favorites season of the year?
I would have to say the summer. I really grew up on the beach. I really like being in the sun.
With your grandfather being Cesar Chavez, how would you say that has affected your life the most?
Well he died when I was pretty young. I carry on his name though and the values he honored during his life. I am proud of living with the name of the family. I was raised with his great influence.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully I will be eight years into my successful golfing career, somewhere on top of the golfing world. I will probably be living in California or Florida maybe with a family, I don’t know.
Red or Green Chile?
Neither, if I had to pick one it would be Red but I am from California.
