LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team had a successful first day at ITA Regionals, hosted by UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Lobos captured three first-round matches and a pair of wins in the second round of singles’ play to close the day.
Kristin Eggleston, Laura Richardson and Michaela Bezdickova each notched wins in the opening round of play, with Eggleston and Bezdickova each picking up a second-win as well.
Bezdickova only gave up three games in sweeping past her two opponents in straight sets. She bested Utah’s Ashley Tanner 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round and defeated Utah State’s Kristina Voytsehovich, 6-1, 6-1 to close out her day.
Eggleston bested Colorado State’s Lauren Mulhern in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 before sweeping past Northern Colorado’s Jennifer Whateley, 6-1, 6-4.
New Mexico’s Laura Richardson beat Weber State’s Naseem Eslami, 6-4, 7-6, before giving way to the Rebels’ Nives Pavlovic, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lobos’ Ashley Bonner split the first two sets against Northern Colorado’s Jill Kappel – each winning 6-4 – before succumbing in the third set, 6-2.
After over 12 hours of action, head coach Roy Canada thought it was a good start for the Lobos.
“It was a very long day for us today,” Canada said. “We started at 7:30 this morning and finished up with the last match at 9 p.m. We got three through to the second round and two through to the third. A couple of matches got away from us but overall a good first day for us.”
A total of 18 teams from the Mountain Region are competing, with play resuming Thursday, October 14, at 9:30 a.m. MT.
