ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team is preparing to face UNLV at 5 p.m. this Thursday at Seidler Natatorium in a dual meet.
This is the Lobos’ second conference contest of the season; their first meet came against Utah on Sept. 18 at the West Mesa Aquatics Center. The Lobos are 0-1 on the season and in conference play as well.
Last year when the Lobos faced UNLV they fell short of victory with a final score of 147-89. New Mexico diver Aubrey Bush captured first on both the 1 and 3-meter springboards, and looks to repeat that success this week.
This Thursday’s meet will be the season opener for the Rebels who were picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference in the preseason coaches’ poll.
The Lobos look ready to compete against UNLV after having a strong opening meet against Utah. They were shy of a victory losing to Utah 236-228, but Head swimming coach Tracy Ljone was happy with the performance of her team.
Freshman newcomers Stelicia Flores and Jorgi Hobson had standout performances for the Lobos against Utah, and Lobo sophomore Hayley Martin swam competitive MWC times.
Lobo divers started the season strong as well as they took the top four spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard with 2009 MWC 3-meter diving champion Bush placing first and second in the 3-meter and 1-meter respectively.
Lobo swimming will be on the road this Saturday as they travel to Denver, Colo. to compete in the Denver Relays at noon MST. They then return home for a conference meet on Oct. 23 at 11:00 a.m. MST when they welcome Colorado State, San Diego State, and Air Force.
