ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team fell to the University of Denver 1-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference play Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos are now 1-1-0 in conference matchups, and 4-3-2 overall this season.

Denver’s Kellan Christensen scored the game’s lone goal at 65:28. Christensen was assisted by Zach Bolden, who gave a cross pass from the right side. It was one of the Pioneers’ four shots on the night.

“They had one scoring chance the whole game and they scored a goal on it,” said Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “It was pretty disappointing.”

UNM had 21 shots to Denver’s four, including eight shots on goal, but the Lobos just couldn’t find the back of the net.

“It was just one of those nights,” Lobo forward Devon Sandoval said. “In the first half we weren’t connecting any passes. The second half we had had plenty of chances, we just didn’t put them away.”

While it was a frustrating night that yielded an unsatisfying result, Fishbein was able to recognize some positives from the contest.

“I thought James Urbany came in in the second half and made a real difference,” Fishbein said. “He made three or four real quality serves and we had guys in good positions with chances to score goals.”

Denver improves to 2-0-0 in conference play, and holds a 5-3-2 record on the season. The Lobos have a quick turnaround as they face the Air Force Academy at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

AFA owns the advantage in the all-time series between the Falcons and Lobos at 16-15-1. The Falcons lost to the UNLV 1-0 Friday night, putting them 0-2 in conference play, and 2-8 heading in to Sunday’s match.
