BURLINGTON, Iowa — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team matched Monday’s stellar performance, again shooting a 3-under-par 285 during Tuesday’s final round of Golfweek’s Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow golf course and wrapping up the event with a solid fourth-place finish.
The Lobos concluded the first event of their season having shot a 6-under 288-285-285=858, good enough to fend every member of the 15-team field except host Iowa (268-285-280=833, -31), North Carolina State (283-289-276=848, -16) and Liberty (289-295-271=855, -9).
New Mexico saw two golfers, sophomore John Catlin and senior Tom Carlson, each with a 4-under 212, finish in a six-way tie for ninth place. It marks the second top-10 finish for Carlson as a Lobo, having also finished ninth at the 2009 Arizona Intercollegiate.
Catlin, the reigning Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, also captured his second top-10 finish Tuesday afternoon, having finished fifth at the 2010 Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
Travis Ross scored his seventh top-25 finish for UNM, carding a 2-under 71-74-69=214 and finishing tied for 17th. Sam Chavez and Ryan Gay rounded finished tied for 51st with identical 9-over 225s.
“This was a good start to the season for us,” New Mexico head coach Glen Millican said. “We saw several positives from each of the guys. Catlin and Carlson tied for ninth place. It was a good tournament for both of them.”
The Lobos are in action again next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 27-28, at the University of Colorado’s Mark Simpson Invitational before returning home to host the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Friday, Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 2.
