A tough first round put the New Mexico women’s golf team in a hole after the first day of the 31st Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico Championship Course (par-73, 6,187 yards) in Albuquerque.

New Mexico is in 10th place with a 36-hole total of 613 (314-299). The 22-over 314 is the Lobos’ worst 18 holes in its own tournament since 1996 when it shot a 318 in the final round. UNM rebounded in the second round with a 7-over 299.

The Lobos trail leader Ohio State by 26 shots entering Saturday’s final round. The Buckeyes lead the 17-team field at 3-over 587, and hold a 4-stroke advantage over Oregon and San Diego State (591). Denver is fourth at 594.

Saturday’s final round begins at 8 a.m. MDT. Live stats are available at GolfStat.com.

“I think round one was just a lack of experience for us,” said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo. “When your No. 1 and 2 are 12-over par, that’s not going to do you any good. There are some things we need to work on, definitely. We played much better the second round, but still not all that great. Hopefully, we’ll come tomorrow and have a good Lobo round.”

UNLV senior Therese Koelbaek holds the individual lead at 6-under 140 (70-70). She has a 2-shot lead over Oregon’s Erica Omlid (70-72), San Diego State’s Malin Enarsson (71-71) and Ohio State’s Rachel Rohanna (69-73).

Oregon’s Kendra Little, the defending McGuire Invitational individual champion, is tied for 45th at 8-over 154 (77-77).

Junior Rebecca Hellbom is the top Lobo at 2-over 148 (77-71), which is good for 12th place.

Freshman Manon de Roey is tied for 64th at 159 (82-77).

The Lobos also have three individuals participating. Freshman Sofia Hoglund is tied for 59th at 158 (77-81). Junior Erin Miller is tied for 64th at 159 (78-81) and senior Jordan Kennon is tied for 76th at 163 (81-82).
