The 20th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished in seventh place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic played in Fort Collins, Colo. The Lobos shot 16-over 880 (291-295-294) over 54 holes on the par-72, 6,302-yard Ptarmigan Country Club course. UNM finished third at this tournament last year.
The Lobos did pick up 1.5 points in the Rio Grande Rivalry by beating the New Mexico State women by 20 shots.
Colorado won the Ptarmigan team championship by two shots over California. The Buffs, who will be in Albuquerque this weekend for the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational, finished atop the 17-team field at 865 (288-290-287).
Junior Rebecca Hellbom was the top Lobo finisher, tying for eighth at 1-under 215 (69-71-75). Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro claimed the individual title at 9-under 207 (70-67-70).
Sophomore Bethany Buchner had the best tournament of her Lobo career, tying for 22nd at 4-over 220 (75-74-71). Buchner set UNM personal bests for low round (1-under 71 today), low 54 (220), low total in relation to par (+4) and best finish (22nd).
Junior Manon de Roey shot 233 (83-74-76), and tied for 68th.
It’s a busy week for the Lobos as they will be back home to host the 31st Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational Friday and Saturday at the UNM Championship Course. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
