The 20th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is in eighth place after two rounds of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic being played in Fort Collins, Colo. The Lobos played their first two rounds of the 2010-11 season in 10-over 586 (291-295)on the par-72, 6,302-yard Ptarmigan Country Club course. UNM finished third at this tournament last year.
The 17-team field begins Tuesday’s final round with a shotgun at 8:30 a.m. Live stats are available at GolfStat.com.
New Mexico trails host Colorado State by 11 shots entering the final round. The Rams are at 1-under 575 (290-285) followed by Colorado at 578 and California at 579. UNM is just one shot out of fifth place held by Illinois, Louisville and Oregon at 585.
Junior Rebecca Hellbom is the top Lobo. She is tied for fifth place at 4-under 140 (69-71). Hellbom trails Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro by three strokes. Mortellaro is at 7-under 137 (70-67).
Hellbom opened her junior season with a 69, her fifth career round in the 60s. She bogeyed No. 1, but answered with an eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd then birdied 7 and 9 for a 33 on the front nine.
UNM sophomore Bethany Buchner shot 75-74 and is tied for 33rd at 5-over 149.
Junior Manon de Roey shot 157 (83-74), and is tied for 70th.
It’s a busy week for the Lobos as they will be back home to host the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational Friday and Saturday at the UNM Championship Course.
