After spending a week’s vacation with her family traveling around Western Europe, freshman Tina Doughty is back at home in Granbury, Texas. The same home, in fact, where she grew up in a neighborhood full of boys. “I had to be tough to hang out with them. I grew up playing basketball with them, so I had to play hard to earn their respect,” Tina said.
With two brothers — one older and one younger — and being the only girl around in the neighborhood, Tina inevitably grew up a tomboy. “I was definitely a tomboy, and I didn’t necessarily grow out of it either. I still carry it with me,” Tina said. Growing up surrounded by boys may help explain her fearless attitude on the court and her love for the game. “I just knew since I was little that basketball was the sport for me. I love the game, I love winning, and I love making baskets.”
Tina considers shooting to be one of the strongest areas of her game, and with good reason, too. She averaged 21.5 points and 9.8 rebounds during her senior season of high school basketball. Tina hopes her shooting abilities are a great addition to the team this season, but is mostly looking forward to “traveling with the team and seeing what it’s actually going to be like in the new and improved Pit”.
Four weeks was all it took for Tina to thoroughly enjoy her time in New Mexico and make her anxious to come back. “For the first two weeks I was really sore, and I wasn’t used to that. But after that I really, really loved it,” said Tina. “The workouts were intense, but you get used to it. And luckily the classes weren’t too hard!”
Even though she doesn’t remember the name of the restaurant, Tina does remember loving some New Mexican chicken enchiladas. Well, at least we have one freshman who has conformed to the food!
Like many other Americans who are not aware New Mexico is one of the United States, when Tina first received a letter from New Mexico, her first thought was, “Where is that?!” But after visiting and beginning her time as a UNM student, Albuquerque was more than `somewhere, over there, in the desert…I think’. “It definitely exceeded my expectations. Even when I visited I was like wow this is awesome!” Tina said. “It’s really neat and everyone is very welcoming, nice, and helpful. The climate is awesome!”
It’s nice to have someone so enthused about UNM, which makes me even more excited for Tina and the rest of the team to come back to New Mexico and enjoy it all together!
