Three University of New Mexico women’s golfers have been named to the 2010 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team.
Jodi Ewart, Rebecca Hellbom and Bethany Buchner were all recognized for their accomplishments on the course and in the classroom.
The criteria for selection includes carrying a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average and competing in at least 50 percent of an institution’s regularly-scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Ewart earned the award for the second straight season while adding to her lengthy list of accolades as UNM’s most decorated golfer. Ewart graduated in four years with a 3.79 GPA and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She was a three-time All-American (2007, `09 and `10) who won a school-record five individual titles, including the Mountain West Conference individual championship in 2007, ’08 and ’10. Ewart was the four-time MWC Player of the Year, the only student-athlete in any MWC sport to be recognized four times.
Hellbom also made the All-American Scholar Team for the second year in a row. She carries a 3.89 GPA, majoring in Music Performance / Vocal. Hellbom played in all 11 tournaments and ranked 81st in the nation by GolfStat.com with a 74.91 scoring average in 33 rounds. She earned All-Mountain West Conference honors after finishing third at the league championships.
Buchner completed her first year at UNM with a 3.59 GPA. She is majoring in business. Buchner competed in all 11 tournaments during the 2009-10 season.
Future Lobo Sammi Stevens won her second tournament of the summer, grabbing the Albuquerque Women’s City Amateur Golf Championship by 13 shots at the Santa Ana Golf Club.
The Hereford, Texas, native shot a 1-under 215 (74-69-72). Stevens will be a freshman at UNM in August.
Last month, Stevens won the Texas Oklahoma Jr. title for the second straight year. She bested the 61-player field with a resounding 21-stroke win. Stevens carded an 8-under-par 277 (69-67-72-69) on three different courses in Wichita Falls, Texas.
