UPDATE: Now over 20,500! (6/17/10)
The official New Mexico Lobos Facebook fan page topped the 20,000-fan mark on Saturday, less than a year into its existence.
That figure puts the page among the top-35 most popular collegiate athletic department Facebook pages in the nation. New Mexico became only the second Mountain West Conference school to attract over 20,000 fans, with the University of Utah Facebook fan page nearing 24,000 followers.
The New Mexico Lobos page, which was started on July 13, 2009, has fans spanning the United States as well as 19 additional countries. The site is also viewed in 20 languages. The majority of fans reside in New Mexico, with over 8,000 located in Albuquerque alone. Outside of New Mexico, the top cities for UNM followers include Dallas, Denver, Houston, New York and Phoenix.
As a fan of the New Mexico Lobos on Facebook, individuals are able to get up-to-date information on all 21 varsity sports. Fans are privy to the latest news, videos and photo galleries of the Lobos’ events. The page also affords fans the opportunity to offer comments on New Mexico’s postings.
The UNMLOBOS Twitter account is also gaining momentum, and is nearing 2,000 fans.
