2010 Lobo Country Tour Starts June 17 In Taos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Like a great music festival, the Lobo Country Tour was such a great success in 2009, it is going on the road again in 2010. The University of New Mexico Athletics Department will be hop-scotching around the state all summer to promote Lobo Athletics as well as the University and its strong academic programs. The 2010 Lobo Country Tour will be powered by Defined Fitness, New Mexico State Parks Boating Safety & Education Bureau and the Lobo Radio Network.

The tour starts in Taos on Thursday, June 17 with a reception at the Taos Country Club beginning at 6 p.m. Lobo men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein and women’s head coach Kit Vela will be two of the featured coaches that evening. The reception is open to the general public and reservations can be made with UNM marketing manager Rebecca Hogue at (505) 925-5909 or rhogue@unm.edu.

The second tour stop will be the next day in Gallup, Friday, June 18. Lobo coaches from the women’s basketball, track & field, soccer and baseball teams will be on hand for a Lobo Sports Day at Gallup Municipal Stadium. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and run until 12 p.m. for youth ages 13 and under and local Special Olympians.

Lobo fans will have other opportunities to visit with the coaches that day, including a Coaches Luncheon at Sammy C’s Sports Bar with Lobo women’s basketball head coach Don Flanagan as the featured speaker, and a golf tournament and cookout at Fox Run Golf Course. The luncheon at Sammy C’s begins at 12 p.m. The Kiwanis Noon Day Golf Club of Gallup will host the golf tournament and cookout, benefiting scholarships for the UNM Gallup Nursing program. The 3-man scramble begins at 1 p.m., followed by the cookout at 6:30 p.m. Golf is $80 per person with the cookout included. The cookout is $20 per person. Stop No. 3 will be in Rio Rancho on Thursday, June 24. The day will start with a luncheon at Chamisa Hills Country Club. Lobo football head coach Mike Locksley will be the feature speaker with the event beginning at 11:30 a.m. Rio Rancho High School will be the site of Lobo Sports Day activities. The event, featuring coaches from basketball, football, baseball and soccer, will begin at 1:30 p.m. and is open to youth ages 8-13 and local Special Olympians. July will feature stops in Los Lunas on the 13th, Farmington on the 17th and Los Alamos on the 22nd. The Los Lunas Rotary Club will host a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. The site and cost will be set in the coming weeks. The site and times of Lobo Sports Day activities, featuring Lobo men’s tennis coach Alan Dils and women’s soccer coach Kit Vela, will also be set in the coming weeks.

The Farmington tour stop will begin with a lunch reception at Defined Fitness, followed by a Lobo Special Olympics Sports Day at the Farmington Recreation Center. The lunch will begin at 12 p.m., followed by the sports activities with the Lobo baseball and swimming & diving coaches at 1 p.m.

Golf, basketball, swimming & diving, volleyball and softball will be some of the featured activities the Los Alamos Lobo Special Olympics Sports Day on July 22 at 2:30 p.m. Lobo fans also have an opportunity to meet with several Lobo coaches earlier in the day at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon.
