The NCAA released the 2008-09 Academic Progress Rate (APR) data and penalty reports for all 332 Division I institutions today as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. The report is based on four-year calculations of data from 2005-06 through the 2008-09 academic year.
The University of New Mexico’s 21 sports improved the school’s single-year rate for the third straight academic year.
Eighteen University of New Mexico teams’ multi-year scores were above the 925 threshold required by the NCAA, including one team (men’s cross country) that received a perfect 1000.
The NCAA Division I Board of Directors set 925 as its minimum threshold for teams to meet or face possible sanctions. The APR is a real-time measure of a team’s academic performance and is calculated by reviewing eligibility and retention.
Four Lobo teams (men’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s swimming and diving) had a perfect 1000 APR in 2008-09.
Fourteen of the Lobos’ 21 programs improved their yearly rate in 2008-09. Three were unchanged while four lost ground.
Men’s basketball had the greatest improvement from 2007-08, soaring to 980 from 917. Other big gainers were men’s soccer by 53 (934 to 987), women’s track by 42 (949 to 991), softball by 39 (925 to 964), volleyball by 38 (942 to 980), women’s golf by 36 (964 to 1000) and men’s golf by 32 (925 to 957).
