The University of New Mexico is sending a record number 24 individual qualifiers and one relay team (total of 26 Lobos) to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship Preliminaries in Austin, Texas. New Mexico’s previous qualifying record for NCAA competition was 19 in 2009.
The Lobos have eight athletes in the top 10 in their respective events in the west region including senior Lee Emanuel (No. 2) in the 1500m and junior Deanna Young (No. 3) in the triple jump. Events begin on Thursday (May 27) at the Mike A. Myers Stadium and run through May 29.
Each event includes the top 48 in the west region. All athletes have to compete in this weekend’s preliminary competition to advance to the NCAA Championship. The only exception is competitors in the heptathlon and decathlon.

Lobos In The Rankings
U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released the rankings Tuesday with the Lobo women moving up six spots from No. 23 to No. 17. The men stayed at No. 22.
The only other MWC school to appear in the rankings in the men of BYU at No. 11 and the BYU women at No. 16.
The rankings this week used only data from those who declared and were accepted into the NCAA Preliminaries.
