ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico’s head football coach Mike Locksley announced Tuesday that junior quarterback Tate Smith has left the program.

“Tate made the decision to transfer and we’ve granted him the release,” said Locksley. “We wish him the best as he moves forward with his career. He has been released to all Division I institutions except Mountain West Conference schools and future non-conference opponents for the life of his eligibility.”

Smith, a native of Odessa, Texas (Permian HS), redshirted the 2009 season. His only playing time at UNM was in 2008, when he played in four games. Smith was 7-21 passing for 82 yards as Lobo. He transferred to UNM prior to the 2008 season, after spending his freshman season at Cisco Junior College.
