The 20th-ranked New Mexico Lobos remain in sixth place after two rounds of the NCAA Women’s Golf Central Regional being played in Columbus, Ind. UNM shot a 30-over 318 on a blustery day at Otter Creek Golf Course (par 72, 6,417 yards). The Lobos have a 36-hole total of 624 (306-318).

Southern Cal leads the 54-hole tournament at 603 followed by Arizona State (607) and Oklahoma State (613).

Temperatures were pleasant enough today with highs in the low-80s, however, afternoon winds gusting to 40 m.p.h., made it a challenging day for teams that teed off later in the day like UNM. The weather in Indiana is slated for a dramatic change in the next 24 hours, though, as Saturday’s high temperature is forecast for just 57 degrees.

The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C. UNM is seeking its 15th appearance in the Championships and third showing in the past four years.

New Mexico is two shots ahead of three teams that are tied for eighth place: Georgia, Michigan State and Ole Miss. It will be a real fight on Saturday as teams 4 through 12 are separated by just eight strokes.

Lobo senior Jodi Ewart remains tied for fourth after shooting a 5-over 77 for a two-round total of 149 (72-77). She was 1 over at the turn, but made double bogeys at the par-4 2nd and the par-4 6th. UNM started its round on No. 10 today.

Ewart trails Southern Cal’s Lizette Salas (146) and Oklahoma State’s Victoria Park by three shots heading into Saturday’s final round. Considering the conditions, Salas had an unbelievable day, shooting a 1-under 71. Martina Gavier from Kent State is third at 147.

How tough did Otter Creek play today? The average score among the 123 participants was 81.89 and only Salas was able to shoot par or better.

UNM sophomores Rebecca Hellbom (78-80) and Sarah Salvo (78-80) are both at 158 and tied for 39th place.

Senior Britney Choy (78-81) is at 159 with freshman Bethany Buchner at 167 (80-87).

Final round action for New Mexico begins Saturday at 6 a.m. MDT off No. 10. The Lobos will be paired with Oregon and Purdue.
