COLUMBUS, Ind.–The 20th-ranked New Mexico Lobos are in sixth place after the first round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Central Regional being played in Columbus, Ind. UNM shot an 18-over 306 on the Otter Creek Golf Course (par 72, 6,417 yards). Arizona State leads the 54-hole tournament at 297, nine shots ahead of the Lobos.

The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C. UNM is seeking its 15th appearance in the Championships and third showing in the past four years.

New Mexico senior Jodi Ewart shot even-par 72 (35-37) and is in a four-way tie for fourth place. Ewart was 2-under on her round after birdies at 1 and 5. However, she made bogey-5 on 9 and 10 before playing par golf the final eight holes.

Purdue’s Thea Hoffmeister and Kendra Little from Oregon share the first-round lead at 2-under 70.

UNM sophomore Rebecca Hellbom had a bumpy ride on the first day. She stood at 1-under through No. 6, but lost six shots on the next five holes with four bogeys and a double bogey. Birdies at 14 and 15 pushed Hellbom back to 3-over on the day, but a bogey at 16 and a double on 18 left her with a 6-over 78 (38-40).

Senior Britney Choy (40-38) and sophomore Sarah Salvo (40-38) also checked in at 78. Freshman Bethany Buchner ended with an 80 (43-37).

The Lobos’ second round begins Friday at 10:30 a.m. MDT.
