ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico football team showcased its offensive weapons Saturday in an hour and a half scrimmage inside University Stadium. The Lobo offense racked up 12 touchdowns, including six on the ground and six through the air. Senior Terence Brown led all rushers with 99 yards, 3 TDs on 29 carries. Five different wide receivers caught touchdown passes, with senior Chris Hernandez pulled in two. UNM combined for 576 total yards, 239 rushing and 337 passing.

“I thought both sides of the ball played well today,” said Lobo head coach Mike Locksley. “The defense has had two great practices, and I liked the way the defensive line pushed us on short yardage. Offensively, we started off pretty well but struggled down the stretch. We got inconsistent late and turned the ball over. That is something we haven’t had issues with this spring. We need to get that cleaned up heading into our final week. Overall, I thought we had some guys make plays today.”

The scrimmage was a tale of two halves. The offensive connected on big plays during the first part and looked impressive. Late in the scrimmage it was all defense. Senior linebacker Terel Anyaibe led the way with 10 tackles, while the defensive line was stout in short yardage situations.

Early in the scrimmage, sophomore running backs Demond Dennis and Kasey Carrier showcased their considerable skills. Dennis, who finished with 70 yards on 18 carries, had a long run of 30 yards. Carrier found the end zone on his only carry of the game. He beat two Lobo defenders to the corner for a 7-yard score. Carrier suffered a high-ankle sprain on the play and did not return.

Brown received the majority of the carries Saturday, and showed the depth of New Mexico’s backfield.

“I try to take advantage of my opportunities,” said Brown. “I wanted to show the coaching staff what I can do. I give a lot of credit to the offensive line for their blocks up front. I was able to find a few holes today and use my speed. It felt great being able to get a lot of reps and make plays.”

Sophomore QB B.R. Holbrook ran the first-team offense, completing 10-19 passes for 129 yards. Holbrook finished the scrimmage with 3 TDs, connecting with Hernandez twice and senior Bryant Williams.

Junior transfer Lamaar Thomas, 91 yards led all receivers, 85 of which came on an 85-yard score. Thomas, who finished with 91 yards receiving and 2 catches, slipped behind the secondary and caught a pass on the run, resulting in an 85 yard TD from junior QB Tate Smith.

Thomas was one of 11 different receives to catch a pass. Freshman Myles Daughtry had a 48-yard touchdown reception, while sophomore Levi Jaeckle had two catches for 19 yards, including a 7-yard TD grab. Jaeckle made a remarkable diving catch for his first TD of the spring.

Williams finished with 3 catches for 27 yards, while sophomore Ty Kirk had 2 for 39.

Smith, who ran the second-team offense, went 9-14 for 208 yards and 3 TDs in his first full scrimmage of the spring.

Defensively, Anyiabe was the only tackler with double-digit stops. Senior Cody Neely racked up 9 tackles, while Carmen Messina, Peter Gardner and Freddy Young all had 8.

UNM had 3.5 sacks, 4 tackles for loss and 4 pass breakups.

The Lobo defensive line front accounted for 38 tackles. During the final portion of the scrimmage, the front line held strong and pinned the o-line on their heels. Junior DE Jaymar Latchison and sophomore DE Jake Carr had seven tackles. Freshman Jacori Greer finished with six stops, while sophomores Ugo Uzodinma and Ahraya Crespin had five.

Junior kicker James Aho made the only field goal of the scrimmage, connecting from 37 yards. New Mexico was 1-2 on field goals Saturday after Garrett Hentrup missed a 49-yarder.

New Mexico enters its final week of spring ball, with practices Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-6:25 p.m. The 2010 Cherry-Silver Spring Game will be Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. MT in University Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on GoLobos.com, with Scott Galetti calling the action.
