The 22nd-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team tied for the fourth-best score of the day to move into ninth place after two rounds of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.
UNM shot a 12-over 300 at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 72, 6,255 yards) for a 36-hole total of 605. UCLA leads the 17-team field at 585, one shot better than Arizona.
The Lobos were poised for a better score, but had the misfortune of playing the latter half of their round in strong, gusty winds.
New Mexico still has a good shot at a top-five finish as it is just six shots out of fourth place held by TCU at 599.
Sophomore Rebecca Hellbom led UNM today with a 1-over 73, making two birdies and three bogeys. She is tied for 19th at 5-over 149 (76-73).
Hellbom is seven shots behind Texas A&M’s Sarah Zwartynski and Stephanie Kono from UCLA, who share the individual lead at 2-under 142.
Senior Britney Choy shot 74 today and is tied for 30th at 8-over 152 (78-74).
Lobo senior Jodi Ewart, who came into the tournament ranked fourth in the nation with a scoring average of 71.12, suffered her worst round of the season for the second straight day. After a 76 on Friday, Ewart shot 77 today. She is tied for 34th at 9-over 153.
Sophomore Sarah Salvo is also tied for 34th at 153 (75-78). She was even on today’s round through 13 holes, but closed with two bogeys and two double bogeys over the final five holes for a 78.
Freshman Bethany Buchner is tied for 45th in the 90-player field at 11-over 155 (79-76).
