The 21st-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is tied for ninth place after the first round of the Bruin Wave Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif. Lobo senior Jodi Ewart shot a 3-under 69 and is all alone in sixth place. The 18-team field beings second round action Tuesday at 9 a.m. MST. Live stats are available at GolfStat.com.
UNM shot a 7-over 295 at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club (par 72, 6,282 yards). The Lobos are tied with Oregon, 12 shots behind first-round leader Arizona. The Wildcats shot 283 (5-under) and have three-shot edge over top-ranked UCLA and No. 6 Southern California.
Ewart demonstrated her usual consistent play with two birdies on the front nine. She got to 4-under after birdies at 12 and 13, but made bogey on 15 to finish at 69. Ewart is two shots behind Washington’s Molly Aronsson and Danielle Kang from Pepperdine, who share the lead at 5-under 67. Three other golfers are tied for third at 4-under 68.
UNM senior Britney Choy had a great round going, making three birdies on the back nine to sit at 3-under after 17 holes. However, the finishing hole was unkind as Choy suffered a triple-bogey 8 on No. 18. She finished at even-par 72 and is tied for 11th place.
Sophomore Sarah Salvo is tied for 38th at 3-over 75 while freshman Bethany Buchner and sophomore Rebecca Hellbom are tied for 62nd after shooting 7-over 79.
