The 27th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team opens its 2010 spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Wildcat Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Arizona National Golf Club (par 71, 6,146 yards) in Tucson. The 16-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday. EWART LOOKS TO DEFEND WILDCAT TITLE – UNM’s Jodi Ewart and Lizette Salas from Southern California return to defend their individual title. Both players shot 3-under 213 at last year’s tournament that was played at the Nicklaus Legacy Course in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Ewart was the only player in the field to shoot par or better in all three rounds: 72-71-70.

THE COMPETITION – The highly competitive 16-member field features 12 teams ranked in the top-30 of the Feb. 15 Golfweek poll. Host Arizona is No. 19 and will be joined by UNM, No. 1 Arizona State, No. 3 Auburn, No. 16 California, No. 15 Denver, No. 5 Duke, No. 22 Oklahoma State, Oregon, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 25 Stanford, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 28 Tulane, UNLV, No. 6 Southern Cal and Washington.

UNM HISTORY AT THE WILDCAT INVITE – The Lobos are making their 18th appearance at the Wildcat Invitational. UNM’s best finish is second place on three occasions in 1982, `85 and `88. Last year, the Lobos finished in a tie for 10th with 19th-ranked California. The 17-team field featured nine teams ranked in the top-25.

LOBO LINEUP – Head coach Jill Trujillo will send the following players to Arizona: 1) Jodi Ewart, 2) Rebecca Hellbom, 3) Britney Choy, 4) Bethany Buchner and 5) Sarah Salvo.

BRANCH LAW FIRM CLINIC IS MARCH 6 – The UNM women’s golf team will host the annual Branch Law Firm Lobo Golf Clinic Saturday, March 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the UNM Championship Course. The clinic is free and open to all levels of female players. It will be taught by UNM head coach Jill Trujillo, who is an LPGA/PGA professional, Lobo assistant coach Becky Dover and the New Mexico women’s golf team. Registration is simple. Just show up at the course. Clubs will be provided to those who do not have them. The clinic will move indoors in case of bad weather. Call 505/277-4527 for more information
