New Mexico head coach Steve Alford:
Opening Statement:
“I’ve know coach Fisher a long time. I played when he coached Michigan. I have unbelievable respect for him and his program. San Diego State is a great basketball team. They are very physical and very athletic. I thought we controlled the game. In the second half we had control but they made everything down the stretch. I thought they made some big time shots and that’s what good teams do.
We made some careless mistakes but I couldn’t be more pleased. When you are up 10 points and you lose the lead in that last four minutes and are down three in overtime and we still found a way to win. These guys continue to amaze me how they get the job done. I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort our guys gave. ”
On Darington Hobson’s performance:
“He had one of those special nights that special players have. He is very, very gifted. He played all but a few minutes. He came out when he got a leg cramp. Darington was probably going to play the whole time. For him to make the plays he made in overtime, not a lot of people can put together those kind of numbers. He is a very special player that got it going early today. ”
On the conference race as is stands after the victory over San Diego State:
“We knew the BYU game was lopsided. We knew we had a chance to play for first place with seven games left to go in conference play. Not just going into next week in first place. I thought it was big that this was a good team and this was a big game. Other than BYU this was the next best RPI game. For them to leave our building two games behind us, I thought that was key especially with us going on the road.
We have two really difficult road games before we get home. We know going on the road next week a loss would been a lot tougher to take than a win. This is a great league and we’ve won seven in a row. No team in our league has done that yet. Our guys have accomplished a lot. ”
San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher:
Opening statement:
“It was a great basketball game. I am extremely disappointed for our players, but I am 10 times as proud for how we fought, competed, found a way to come back, and gave ourselves multiple chances to win a game against a really good team in a hostile, hostile environment.”
On play of UNM’s Darington Hobson and SDSU’s D.J. Gay:
“He has done that to several people. He is good. He is real good. D.J. Gay had a career-high 25 (points) and made some big-time plays for us. He is the smallest, slightest we got, but yet he is the toughest we got too.”
