ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 49th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s tennis team blanked 59th-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-0, Saturday night at the Linda Estes Tennis Center to kick off the dual season with a win.
The Lobos (1-0) captured the doubles point with two wins to give them a 1-0 edge heading into singles play. Sophomore tandem Carl Ho and Phil Anderson secured the first win with an 8-3 defeat of Duje Janjic and Robert Raguz at the No. 2 slot. Ho and Anderson built a 3-0 lead before taking the match, 8-3.
At the No. 3 position, junior Joe Wood and freshman Conor Berg rallied from a 3-6 deficit for five straight points to pick up the doubles point for the Lobos with a final 8-6 win.
Wood, the Lobos’ only upperclassmen, would collect the winning point in singles, defeating Alex Pavlov, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
Anderson and Berg provided two quick wins for the Lobos at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions respectively. Each had two-set victories, Anderson defeating Raguz 6-2, 6-1, and Berg defeating Andrew Maingot, 6-1, 6-2.
With the win already intact, 4-0, the remaining Lobos played out their matches victoriously as well, with Jadon Phillips picking up his first collegiate win. Dunbar secured a victory, pushing his first two sets to tiebreakers to win 7-6, 7-6, over Janjic. Meanwhile, Ho, who played the No. 1 slot, defeated Dmitry Novikov.
The Lobos continue play next weekend at the ITA Indoor Expansion Event in Columbus, Ohio. UNM will face No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8 a.m. MT. Depending on theoutcome of that match, the Lobos will meet either No. 34 Tulsa or No. 30 Notre Dame.
