2009 CollegeFootballNews.com All-Freshman Team
UPDATE – University of New Mexico tight end Lucas Reed was selected to the CollegeFootballNews.com All-Freshman third team today. A redshirt in 2008, Reed started eight times in 12 games this fall and finished with 17 catches for 212 yards and a touchdown in his debut season. It was the most receptions by a Lobo tight end since 2006 and his 12.5-yard average per catch ranked second on the team.
Reed is the first New Mexico tight end to earn freshman All-America honors.
Reed matched a season-high with four catches for 34 yards and his first career touchdown – a sliding, fingertip grab from 13 yards out – on Oct. 24 against UNLV. He also had four catches for 49 yards – all of which were good for first downs – at Texas Tech.
The 6-6, 217-pounder also made strides as a blocker, springing a 62-yard run by fellow freshman Demond Dennis against New Mexico State and clearing the way for quarterback Donovan Porterie’s score on an option keeper against BYU.
